The Art and Science of Measurement: Psychometrics and Scale Development in Language Education

In the field of language education, effective measurement is not a mere technicality, it is a cornerstone of sound research, informed pedagogy, and equitable practice. This issue on ‘The Art and Science of Measurement’ is particularly important as it addresses the ongoing need of a deeper understanding of psychometrics in language education.

We welcome articles that tap on personal insights, reflection, and experience that address scale development and adaptation, challenges and best practice, types of validity evidence, reliability and generalizability. We also welcome submissions that directly address the use of scales in language classrooms with clear impact on the teaching and learning process. 

Article Types:

  • Research Tips: These articles should offer practical strategies and techniques on developing scale and other relevant quantitative research methods in TESOL.

  • Research Reflection: This category invites narratives and reflection with personal touches particularly about the process of designing, adopting/adapting, and conducting scales. 

  • Research Review: These articles should provide critical reviews and summaries of influential research papers and manuals that impact TESOL practice and research.

  • Research Application: These articles feature application of scale and psychometric tools in the language classroom through author’s critical reflection on their process of application and lessons of success and failure.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Articles should not exceed 500 words.

  • All submissions must be original and previously unpublished.

  • Articles should be submitted as Word documents latest November 15, 2025. (extended to November 30, 2025)

  • Please include a brief author bio (50 words) and one headshot image with your submission.
